Getting a preset to work

Most preset pages give you the pack and leave the app to you. Here the app and its plugins come first, then your pack.

1

A saved .ffx preset only stores settings, so nothing opens it alone.

2

The bundle installs the full After Effects app first.

3

Its plugins load in, so presets that call them stop failing.

4

Drop your preset on a layer and the animation plays.

Pros and cons

  • +The app and its plugins arrive in one download, so a preset finds every effect it calls.
  • +Packs you saved before open with it: text presets, transitions, shakes.
  • +Free, from the first click to the installed app.
  • −A full app is a bigger download than a preset pack, so keep time and disk space free for the install.

Where this comes from

After Effects is Adobe's app for motion graphics, visual effects and compositing. A preset saved as .ffx keeps effect settings and keyframes, and it applies only inside After Effects. Many presets also call plugins, which extend what the app can do. The download behind the button is the full After Effects app with a plugin bundle.
